Alexandroupolis is about 40 km from the border with Turkey, 346 km from Thessaloniki and 750 km from Athens. The metropolitan city has a population of 58,000 inh. (2011 census). The municipality is providing space for the installation of a heat pump (pilot plant) since it has high interest and involvement in similar projects. The Municipality of Alexandroupolis is forerunner in energy related projects in Greece: To date, the projects that have been studied, have been licensed, are mature and have been submitted to various funding programs (NSRF, Green Fund, Public Investments Programme, also Horizon 2020, Interreg and others Programmes) related to geothermal energy, district heating and energy efficiency measures are amounting to 50 million EUR. In this sense, it has a high interest in promoting the seawater heat pump technology on a local but also national level. Location
